ASISA defends the contribution of cooperativism and public-private collaboration to the healthcare system

Dr. José Carlos Sánchez Marcos, counselor of Lavinia and delegate of ASISA in Ávila, participated in the Catholic University of Ávila (UCAV) as part of the VII University Week of Social Economy 2026. During his intervention, he highlighted the value of the cooperative model in guaranteeing the quality and accessibility of the healthcare system.

The Espriu Foundation, cooperation and self-governance since 1989

The Espriu Foundation brings together the Spanish institutions which implement the co-operative healthcare model created by Dr Josep Espriu. The main objective of the Espriu Foundation is to oversee the development, promotion and defence of the cooperative healthcare model, centralising the efforts and commitment of Grup Assistència and Grupo Asisa with the dissemination and promotion of the co-operative model as a tool for improving healthcare systems.

The Espriu Foundation brings together the leading institutions of healthcare cooperativism in Spain: SCIAS, Autogestió Sanitària, ASISA and Lavinia.

Together, they form a network that provides high-quality medical care based on collaboration, solidarity and democratic management, placing the patient at the centre.

With 3.2 million insured people, 19 hospitals and 40 own medical centres, 181,303 cooperative members and 7,500 employees, the Foundation represents an efficient, human and socially committed healthcare model.
