HLA Universitario Moncloa and Universidad Europea develop an AI-powered smart ICU

HLA Universitario Moncloa Hospital (Madrid), in collaboration with Universidad Europea de Madrid (UEM), is launching an innovative project focused on artificial intelligence applied to intensive care medicine. The initiative aims to transform the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) into a hyper-connected, safe, and predictive environment, allowing healthcare professionals to anticipate potential adverse events in critical patients.

22 October 2026

The project is led by the IASalud research group under the direction of Dr. Juan José Beunza (professor at UEM), alongside Dr. Samuel González (clinical lead for intensive medicine at Grupo HLA) and Dr. José Luis Lafuente (UEM lecturer and lead for technological development and IoMT integration).

Real-time data integration and IoMT infrastructure

Under the framework of the 'Artificial Intelligence and Critical Patient Safety' project, the hospital has deployed a proprietary Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) architecture in the ICU. This network collects continuous data from thermal monitoring devices, adverse event detection systems, infection surveillance, urinary output tracking, glycemic control, and clinical record reviews.

All gathered information is processed through a local server within the ICU, ensuring strict data protection, pseudo-anonymization, and safety protocols.

Predictive and personalized medicine for critical care

This initial phase establishes a connected digital ecosystem designed to feed future AI models coordinated by intelligent agents. As Dr. Samuel González explains, the true value lies in constructing an integrated infrastructure that connects separate technologies to generate comprehensive clinical insights.

The ultimate goal of this smart ecosystem is to predict patient progression, prevent complications during ICU stays, and advance toward a model of data-driven, personalized intensive medicine.
