Five representatives from the institute participated in the session, in order to find out about the healthcare model designed by Dr. Espriu and to study in depth the concept of co-management or shared management between the users and professionals in a system.

Dr. Gerard Martí, trustee of the Espriu Foundation and deputy medical director of the Hospital de Barcelona, welcomed the Japanese delegation and showed them the basic areas of operation of the hospital, and the organisation and management of the SCIAS co-operative. Martí also gave a detailed description of the interrelations with the professional co-operative Autogestió Sanitària. This was of particular interest to the Japanese academics due to the fact that the co-operative healthcare system in their country is based mainly on users’ co-operatives.
