The CEPES report “Major companies of the social economy, 2020-2021” states that the sector accounts for 10% of Spanish GDP and creates more than 2.1 million direct and indirect jobs.

The report places the network of health cooperatives formed by ASISA and Assistència Sanitària among the major business groups of the social economy, with a turnover close to €1,700 million and more than 6,300 jobs.

The report by the Spanish Confederation of Social Economy Companies (CEPES) gathers information on 1,056 social economy companies, of which 774 are cooperatives. In addition to the types of company, the report analyses variables such as the sector of activity, the number of jobs, the turnover and the autonomous communities in which the companies operate.

Data from seven business groups belonging to the social economy are also collected, including the one formed by the Fundación espriu companies, which have a total turnover of more than €102,250 million.

The companies analysed in the document are recognized under the Social Economy Law, passed in March 2011, which establishes a common legal framework for cooperatives, worker-owned companies, mutual societies, placement companies, special employment centres, fishermen’s associations and associations of the disability sector.

Though this business model has a wide range of legal forms, they are all able to combine business efficiency with values such as solidarity, responsibility and social cohesion. Their management gives priority to people over return on capital by focusing on reinvestment of profits, job creation and business growth.
