Unimed-Sao Paulo Federation visits Hospital de Barcelona

On 13 October, a group of presidents and directors of medical co-operatives from the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo, led by Eudes Freitas Aquino, president of the Unimeds Federation of Sao Paulo, and Americo Utumi, president of the State of Sao Paulo Co-operative Organisation (OCESP) and a member of the board of the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA), participated in a day session which took place in the Hospital de Barcelona.

The vice-president of the Espriu Foundation, Dr. Josep O. Gras, opened the meeting by welcoming the members of the Brazilian co-operatives, and presented the healthcare model created by Dr. Espriu, based on co-management between users and professionals.

Afterwards, Estanislau Simón, director general of the Espriu Foundation, set out the objectives and activities of the Foundation. Mr. Simón also gave a general overview of health co-operativism in Spain and the institutions that support the foundation.

Dr. Gerard Martí, deputy medical director of Hospital de Barcelona and trustee of the Espriu Foundation, gave a presentation dealing with the concept and operation of the hospital co-operative where the session was held, and the activity and interrelations between the institutions making up the Grup Assistència.

The session ended with a fruitful debate and exchange of experiences and opinions between the doctors from Sao Paulo and the representatives of the Espriu Foundation.
